 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What is "proof they live in San Francisco"?

One member of your group must be able to show proof they live in San Francisco such as:

  • Driver's License
  • California ID
  • Rent receipt
  • Utility bill with home address
  • Recent report card mailed from San Francisco Unified School District

2. How many attractions can we visit?

You may visit as many of the 35 Participating Attractions as you want during the event.

3. What does "FAD Hours" mean?

FAD stands for Family Appreciation Day. FAD Hours are the hours that the Participating Attraction agreed to open their doors for free to San Francisco families with children. These hours may be different than their regular Sunday hours. The hours vary by location. Please arrive at the location during their FAD hours.

4. How many children can I bring?

This event is designed for family groups. We define family as adults and children together. One adult may bring as many children as he or she can supervise. Adults are responsible for the behavior of the children they bring. All adults must be accompanied by at least one child ages 0 to 18. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

5. What about high school students?

High school students with valid San Francisco school identification may participate in Family Appreciation Day without adult supervison. Each student must have a picture ID. High school students are asked to be on their best behavior while visiting Participating Attractions.

6. Why is this only for San Francisco families?

Because this is San Francisco tax dollars at work. Costs associated with this event are paid by the San Francisco Children's Fund, which comes from San Francisco property taxes.

7. Is all MUNI free?

All MUNI buses, light-rail vehicles (streetcars), and cable cars are free for kids (up to age 18) with a paying adult from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on January 13. Sorry, BART is NOT FREE.

8. How were the Participating Attractions chosen?

The Participating Attractions volunteer to be included. They are not reimbursed. Event Staff are a combination of employees from the Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families; community volunteers; and Participating Attraction staff.

9. How will it work?

You can just walk right into Participating Attractions that are "Always Free."

When you arrive at a Participating Attraction that normally charges a fee, one adult in your group will be asked to show proof he or she lives in San Francisco. Everyone in your group will receive a special wrist band and an Event Guide. Wear your wrist band and use it for entrance to all Participating Attractions throughout the day.

10. What if places are too full?

Popular locations may get crowded. There may be lines. We will do our best to make sure every one is able to gain entrance, but we must follow safety rules. All entrances are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please arrive during the posted FAD Hours.
